Tyler's Terrace was the original name of the row of six houses that, today, are better known as numbers 122 to 132, Valley Road, Cinderford in the county of Gloucestershire. The postcode is GL14 3HQ.
When the terrace was built, Valley Road didn't exist as a named road and buildings were generally identified by the name of the person who owned it. In this case, someone by the name of 'Tyler'.
My interest in Tyler's Terrace comes from the fact I grew up living in the terrace. My grandparents were renting one of the houses by 1911, it was later taken over by my parents who subsequently bought it from the owner. I sold it in 2004 completing over 90 years of occupation by my family.
Some years ago I started researching the terrace with the aim of finding out when it was built and by whom. Although I'm sure I have discovered who built it, an exact date has been more difficult to ascertain, but an approximation can be made from the available records. What became more interesting to me during my research was the lives of the people living at the time and those responsible for the building's construction. What I've discovered about those people doesn't tell us much about the building itself but does set the scene within which it was built and, perhaps, explains the reason it was built. The people concerned were not particulalrly typical of the local populace - they were not labourers working in the pits or quarries - they were entrepeneurs and business people. I thought it was equally important to record what I discovered about them as to record information about the building. As such, much of what you will find here is not about Tyler's Terrace at all, but the people living at the time, some with connections to the terrace and others not.
Any research into the past is rarely complete or could be described as finished and that is the case here. I'm sure there is more to be found but I decided to document what I've discovered so far and chose to do it in the form of a website so that it could be updated if more information comes to light in the future. I hope it's of interest.
